What’s the difference between a cover, a sample, and interpolation?

  • Cover: a new recording or performance of a song by anyone other than the original performer. For example, All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. The original music was performed and written by Bob Dylan
  • Sample: a short segment of a song licensed from the owner and used to create a new piece. Think Daft Punks hit song “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” sampled by Kanye West
  • Interpolation: Uses a re-recorded portion of a melody derived from an original song with new lyrics and tempo.

What is an example of interpolation in music?

Interpolation is everywhere. Hundreds of popular music are inspired by other pieces. For example, Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” (2019) int. Rodgers and Hammerstein, “My Favorite Things” (1959).

But is interpolation legal?

The short answer is yes, as long as the musician gives proper credit to the original artist. For example, in 2013, the estate of Marvin Gaye successfully sued Robyn Thicke and Pharrell Williams for $5.3M for the “substantial similarities” between “Got To Give It Up” and the latter’s “Blurred Lines.”
