David Berry took an at-home DNA test and discovered dozens of half-siblings.

Was this a coincidence or the fertility fraud of one sperm donor?

How do ancestry tests work?

Many of us are curious about where we came from. I thought I knew about my ancestry and family history, but I was utterly wrong. In fact, most of my family is from Portugal—not Spain. Nowadays, the answer is as easy as spitting in a vial, and in a couple of weeks, a genealogy app tells you everything you need to know about your DNA and family history.

A genealogy test exposes a fertility doctor.

David Berry was just as curious about his past. After taking an Ancestry.com test, Berry discovered he was 56% European Jewish—not Italian like he presumed. It turns out that his biological father was a sperm donor. But after doing some more sleuthing, Berry discovered he had dozens of half-siblings. But it was too much of a coincidence. All of his half-siblings were born in Rochester, New York, and all of their mothers used the same fertility doctor.

David Berry says he closed in on Dr. Morris Wortman, the doctor who allegedly used his own sperm to help women become pregnant. Dr. Wortman declined numerous requests for comment.
